A Note from Vanessa

I started off my year with the idea that I would send two newsletters a month.  I have now blinked twice and immediately failed on that front.   However, one of the beautiful things about life is that failure is simply a learning tool and an opportunity to do better going forward.

The Optimism-Pessimism Spectrum

Ever wonder if you’re an optimist or a pessimist? It’s not always as simple as the classic “glass half-full or half-empty” question. Instead, let’s look at it as an X-Y axis:

🔹 X-Axis: Your expectations—do you generally hope for the best or expect the worst?
🔹 Y-Axis: Your preparedness—do you plan for things to go well or anticipate and prepare for setbacks?

That gives us four categories:

  1. Optimistic Optimists: Expect the best and prepare for it.

  2. Pessimistic Pessimists: Expect the worst and don’t prepare because they assume failure.

  3. Optimistic Pessimists: Hope for the best but don’t prepare much, trusting they’ll figure it out.

  4. Pessimistic Optimists: Hope for the best but actively prepare for the worst (hello, anxiety!).

Understanding where you fall on this spectrum can help you approach challenges, including career transitions, with greater self-awareness.

Teachers: The Ultimate Problem Solvers

Teachers naturally develop a unique blend of skills that make them masters of adaptation and problem-solving. From gathering classroom supplies (just in case) to preparing backup lesson plans for every scenario, we embody resilience and resourcefulness.

That’s why so many careers beyond the classroom are a great fit for teachers!

40 Careers Teachers Can Transition Into – No Additional Degree Required!

One of the biggest concerns teachers have about transitioning is whether they need to go back to school. The good news? You don’t! Many industries value the skills you already have. Here are just a few career paths where teachers thrive:

🔹 HR & Talent Development
🔹 Healthcare
🔹 Project Management
🔹 Sales & Customer Success
🔹 Technical Writing
🔹 Finance and Insurance
🔹 Real Estate related
🔹 And many more!

If you’re feeling stuck, remember: You already have the skills—you just need to translate them to a new audience.

I have created an eBook which is available for sale which contains well over 100 (actually 121!) different jobs a teacher can do outside the classroom without going back for a whole new degree.  What isn't included?  Instructional Design or Corporate Trainer.  I'm not kidding when I say teacher can do a LOT of different things!  Also included are resources of where to go to get low-cost or no-cost training and certificates for those jobs.  This resource is free for my current and former clients.  If you are interested, you can check it out HERE.
