A Note from Vanessa

Hi there! I hope this newsletter finds you enjoying the beginnings of spring. . This week, I want to share a story that resonated deeply with me—one about the Iditarod and the incredible lead dogs that guide their teams through the Alaskan wilderness. It got me thinking about leadership, trust, and endurance—qualities that are so relevant to teaching and career transitions. Teaching is its own kind of endurance race, and like those lead dogs, you have the strength and drive to navigate even the toughest trails. Let’s take a moment to celebrate how far you’ve come and the bright path ahead.

The Iditarod as a Metaphor for Teaching

The Iditarod, a 1,100-mile sled dog race across Alaska, is more than just a test of endurance—it’s a lesson in leadership, teamwork, and trust. At the heart of every team are the lead dogs, the unsung heroes who guide their mushers through storms, frozen rivers, and endless trails. These dogs are chosen for their intelligence, drive, and ability to make quick decisions, even when the musher can’t see what’s ahead.  This year, I am cheering on the Rerun Kennel - a team with a significant number of dogs rescued from the Fairbanks Animal Shelter.

What struck me most was the emphasis on trust. The musher must trust the lead dogs implicitly, knowing they’ll make the right calls in critical moments. This reminded me of the challenges many teachers face in their schools. Without trust in leadership, the sense of isolation and overwhelm can feel insurmountable.

But here’s the thing: just like those lead dogs, you have the strength and determination to navigate even the toughest conditions. Teaching is an endurance race, and not everyone can do it. You’ve already proven your resilience. Now, it’s about channeling that energy into your next chapter.

The Iditarod also celebrates every competitor, not just the winner. The Red Lantern Award honors the last musher to cross the finish line, symbolizing that everyone who completes the race is a winner. Similarly, in your career transition, it’s not about being first—it’s about finishing strong and knowing you’ve accomplished something extraordinary.

So, take a moment to reflect: What drives you? What’s your trail? And who’s on your team to help you reach the finish line?

REFINE Your Job Search with AI

Leaving the classroom and transitioning to a new career can feel overwhelming, but breaking the process into manageable steps makes it easier. In the Refine stage (Step 4 of the 5 Steps Out of the Classroom), you’ll polish your job search tools and strategies to stand out in a competitive market. Here’s how to refine your approach, with a little help from AI:

1. Tailor Your Resume to Job Descriptions

One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is using a generic resume for every application. Most companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to scan resumes for keywords before a human ever sees them. If your resume doesn’t align with the job description, it might not make it past the digital gatekeeper.

How AI Can Help:
AI tools like ChatGPT can rewrite your resume to match specific job descriptions, identify the most important keywords, and reframe your teaching experience in terms of the skills employers are looking for. For example, you can paste your resume and a job description into ChatGPT and ask it to adjust your resume for a better fit while keeping your voice professional and authentic.

2. Break Down Job Descriptions

Job descriptions can feel like a foreign language, packed with jargon and vague expectations. AI can help you decode them to understand what skills are essential versus preferred, how your current skills align with the role, and which key phrases and terminology to use in your resume and cover letter. Simply copy and paste a job description into ChatGPT and ask it to break it down into plain language.

3. Collect Keywords for Resumes and Cover Letters

Translating teaching skills into corporate language can be tricky. AI can identify common industry keywords for roles you’re interested in, suggest alternative ways to phrase your experience to match the language of your target industry, and highlight buzzwords that increase ATS compatibility. This makes it easier to tailor your applications to each job.

4. Upskill and Identify Gaps

Once you know what employers are looking for, the next step is ensuring you have the right skills. AI can analyze your resume and compare it to job descriptions to identify missing skills, recommend free or affordable learning resources (like courses, certifications, or tutorials), and suggest projects or experiences to make you a stronger candidate.

Remember: AI Is Just a Tool, Not a Replacement for Your Voice

While AI can streamline your job search, it’s not magic. You’ll still need to personalize AI’s suggestions to reflect your voice and experience, double-check for accuracy and relevance, and take action on the advice—whether that means tweaking your resume, learning new skills, or practicing interview answers.
